Baby
Chaos is a slinky, sexy, Glasgow based Scottish/English 4 piece
RocknRoll beast. 75% of the power pop combo (!!?) are
prime Scots beef, hailing originally from the previously unknown
Ayrshire metropolis of raw talent that is Stewarton, whilst the
token English gent of the band (and latest addition to the fold)
is a London lad.
The band, after several formative years of underachieving,
eventually managed to maintain a decent line up after vocalist Chris
(wannabe soccer superstar), and Grant pilfered original drummer,
Davy, and bassist, Bobby, from rival local bands. More than merely
drums and bass, these two added new dimension to the band - with
Davys Sixties worshipping and Bobbys unique "Wrestling
the alligator" style of playing the bass complementing the
guitar mayhem of Chris and Grant perfectly.
In February 1993 the band took to the stage for
the first time as Baby Chaos and proceeded to play every shithole
known to man in the UK. Eventually persistence paid off and they
signed a deal with East West Records in August. As soon as the ink
on the contract had dried, the band immersed themselves in that
which is central in their RocknRoll ideology
..touring.
1994 saw them playing almost 130 gigs in the UK
alone. Both headlining and supporting bands such as Elastica, Terrorvision,
Shed 7 and The Wildhearts,. In fact, the only relief from their
hectic touring schedule came when they recorded their debut album,
"Safe Sex, Designer Drugs and the Death of RocknRoll".
Naturally, the release of the debut album necessitated further touring
and, in 1995, the band played their first gigs on foreign shores,
including a headline tour of France and a US tour with Elastica,
during which signs of Dave's imminent departure were first evident.
A week into this tour, following his collapse onstage in Philadelphia,
Dave was replaced by Gen Matthews, then of Jesus Jones, for the
remaining dates of the tour.
The second album, rather cutely titled "Love
Your Self Abuse", was recorded in several phases throughout
1995 and 1996, finally achieving completion in February 1996. This
drawn out process took its toll on the band, with Davy clearly
and profoundly stating that he "was never f**king doing that
again". The album was released in Europe in April 1996, when
again the band were bestowed great reviews for their recorded efforts.
The only single released from "LYSA" in
Europe so far is "Hello". To accompany the song, the band
released another video that required Chris to be in the nude and
enlisted the help of Kelly MacDonald, fresh from her successful
role in the film "Trainspotting", as a female voyeur.
A
British tour was started in April, but was cancelled after the 5th
gig due to Davys ill health. The drummer shortage was overcome
in May when Steve McAlmont, friend and occasional drum tech for
the band, was drafted in for a stadium tour of Germany supporting
Die Toten Hosen. The highlight of the trip to Germany was more than
likely the visit to Cannes in France. Here the band played "Hello"
live for the French TV program Nulle Part Ailleurs Cannes
Film Festival special. With the stage having been built on the beach,
the temptation was too great and straight after the performance,
but whilst still on air, the whole band ran into the sea for a post
gig swim.
Around May of 1996 Dave stated his intention to
leave the band due to health reasons. He managed to fulfil a few
remaining dates the band had booked, and in September he handed
his drumsticks over for the second time to the aforementioned Gen
Matthews, only this time the change was permanent. The following
months were spent rehearsing both old songs for Gen's benefit, and
some new material destined for future release. Gen's first real
test as an official member of Baby Chaos came during a tour of France
in Oct/Nov, which he naturally passed with the greatest of ease
(he has done it all before!).
Recently, the focus of record company business has
shifted to Atlantic Records in New York, and following the release
of LYSA there in April, plans are being made to tour the States
extensively. The album has also been released in Canada and is due
for release in Japan, which will hopefully see the band spending
time in these countries.
