CHAOS IN 1995

Did you think we had disappeared after all the gigs (127), the recording of the album and 4 single releases of '94? 1995 seems to have been quiet in comparison for Baby Chaos. Our last gig in '94 was at the Splash Club in London in December, which was a cracker and a post gig party in some club with furry pink walls was pure Rock'n'Roll MAN!

We saw out Christmas and of course a traditional Scottish new year, waking up some time in mid January, in Paris. WEY HEY! Chaos on the continent! Our first time out of Britain, apart from Dublin, and judging by the reaction from this trip not the last. The reason for going was : 1. Playing live to air on a French TV prime time show hosted by the bloke who did Rapido (his English really isn't as bad as he makes out). After sound checking, for what seemed like 3 days, we played "Hello Victim" to a few million French viewers and the studio audience who were alarmingly dressed in shirts and ties. They seemed to love it though. We were in good company with bands such as Nirvana and The Pixies having previously played on the show.

The second reason for going was to play our first gig there in a venue in downtown Paris called The Chesterfield Cafe (Very French ! Not!!). Cracking gig with a few important people, business wise, in the audience, i.e. record company secret agents and tour promoters who surprisingly stopped counting there money for the 50 minutes we were on stage! We blasted out most of the "Safe Sex Designer Drugs" album set which you would have experienced if you have seen us play live. An excellent time was had by all i.e. we ate like kings, drank for Scotland and partied like Ollie Reed!

On our return to Scotland we set about rehearsing our sweet asses off to get new songs together for our 2nd album. This would take us the best part of 3 months with ideas coming together and the band trying to sort out structures and those awkward bits that come after every 2nd chorus! The bulk of the songs on our next album were written during this period.

During this time of rehearsal we had a gig in none other than Austin, Texas! Austin where??

Our first time in the USA playing at a festival called "South By South West". This was an experience, not only because I don't like flying and the flight took 10 hours, but it was another chance to live it up abroad! The festival is where bands come from all over the world to play in front of the Americans and the hoards of music biz types who also attend. We played a stormer at this small venue called "Maggie Mays" in front of a packed audience and on the strength of this gig and the first album we got the backing of the huge monster which is Elektra Entertainment to promote and release our records in America (Nice work lads!). We would return later in the year to do a coast to coast 7 week tour supporting those top hipsters Elastica.

The recording of the second album started on May 10th at The Brill Building recording studios in Glasgow with our loyal and trusted friend Zmago Smon (he's Slovenian) helping produce and record. We finished recording six weeks later with the "Z" man working us harder than ever in the studio. (Oh those blisters!!) At times it got a bit fraught. I'm just glad we didn't have a swear box or I and a certain Bobby Dunn would be well out of pocket! Having listened to the finished results I'm glad he pushed us, its just you suddenly realise how utter crap you are at playing when you have to be precise. Fifteen songs were recorded and have now been mixed by Zmago and the band at Orinoco, in London.
